LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. BARTLEET WINS. DUNLOP SHIELD. INTER-CLUB MATCH. The competition for the Dunlop Shield was commenced at the Stanley Street oourts on Saturday afternoon. The competition had reached an interesting stage. It la ft competition between two representatives :of each club, in which two singles and one double are played, the object being to win two out of three. Onehunga had beaten Auckland, and were beaten by Parnell, while Romuera received a bye from Wha- . ngarei, and were beaten by Eden and Epsom. This resulted in E. L. Bartleet (Eden and Epsom) having to play E. Page (Parnell), with 'H. Webster (Eden, and Epsom) matched against W. Williams. f Since both the Eden and Epsom players 'won their singles it was not necessary. for . the doubles to be played. i Webster beat Williams after a long ' fight, the Eden and Epsom man making better progress against the wind than _ did his opponent. Both played well up to form and . the match was by no means given away, as the scores show: 6—3, 64, 6—2. I Bartleet and Page had to exrfrt all their court craft to place shots anywhere near ! their proper places. With overhead work and slow shots and lob 3, the wind played havoc, and Page seemed to adapt himself to the conditions more quickly than his partner. He won the first set, 6 — Bart- , leet's only win being a love game. •■'■■ I Set No. 2 was also ■ Page's, although he had to play hard for it, being level at 3_3, 4_4, 6—5, and winning 75. • The Epsom man won the third. 7—6. This was a long-drawn struggle, each player winning , a game, alternately to 5— Page then lost two games. when 80. Bartleet evened the sets in the fourth, when he won 9—7. 7 In this Bet both players were displaying fine form. Alternately they won,, game for game, till 7. In the 16th game Bartleet won after deuce had been twice called, and the 16th game was his to 30. Sets, 2—2. Interest ran high at :\ the commencement of. the fifth and deciding set. Bartj leet won his first service to 30, and Page I repeated the performance.. Bartleet carried ! his service to deuce 9 times before Page won i as the result of netted balls. In the fourth ' game the service -. of Page was losing its sting. Page's returns were so hot that l deuce was called five times before the ParI pell man had a three to one advantage. Bartleet played determinedly • in; the next, winning it to 80, but Page won on hia own' service after deuce in the next, 4— This was Page's last win, hereafter hia plaoing becoming less accurate, while Bartleet netted fewer balls and ■ seamed to have gauged the strength of the wind -better. He won his next to 30, and equalled, 4—fl, in the succeeding game, winning, off Page 'for the loss of one , point. The ninth game he won to 15, lepeating the performance in the next, winning game, set and the Dunlop Shield for Eden and Epsom. . .
