THE NATIONAL PARK.
Lack of imagination in assessing the provision which should speedily be made for visitors to the Tongariro National Park is one of the things which, must first be overcome. • The need for a broader outlook is' well illustrated by the terms of a message from Wanganui, published to-day. Discussion is proceeding, it is stated, (concerning the most suitable site for a hostel. Though not specifically stated, it is obvious that the idea is to cater for those who are able and willing to take their pleasures strenuously, to live under mountaineering conditions. There is no objection to such holiday-makers re-1 ceiving consideration. Indeed, it is' quite . essential that they should.! , What must be recognised, however, | is that to do so much does not mean completing the task of throwing this great playground open to all who wish to enjoy its beauties and health-giving qualities. Many who will feel the call of the mountains will not be able to answer it unless, easier living conditions are avail- \ ! able. They also are entitled to be' considered. What is luxury for j the young and vigorous may be i hardship for others who, by reason of years or lack of constitution, need to have the way made smoother for them. There is no reason why this' park should be barred against any. I If it be argued that the amount of public money available will permit of only the simplest kind of accommodation being provided, the remedy is not far to seek. It is, as the Herald has contended before, by allowing private enterprise to assist Government effort that the best and speediest results will come. Certain safeguards would be needed. They should not be difficult to devise or enforce. With such a broadening of outlook the park should develop into that for which it is intended, | a universal place of resort. j
