DOMINION ATHLETICS.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. GREAT SPRINT CONTESTS. KIRKSEY DEFEATS CARR. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. Eight thousand people watched tho New Zealand amateur athletic championships at Athletic Park to-day. , Interest centred in the international sprint events wherein Kirksey (America), Can* (Australia), and Davidson and Wilson (New Zealand) competed. These events will long be remembered as classic struggles, in both of which the American's knowledge and pace won the day. The weather was cold and the track a trifle heavy owing to rain overnight, but a fairly stiff breeze helped the runners. *In the 100 yds., Carr won his heat easily from Morgan (Otago), with Davidson (Auckland), who looked unwell, third. In the second heat Kirksey and Wilson battled for 50yds., then the AmeiTcan went ahead. At the finish Porritt (Wanganui) spurted into second place. The time for both heats was 10 seconds. In the final, Kirksey was slightly the quickest to start, and at 60yds. was 9in. ahead of Carr. The latter then drew ahead slightly,; but, with a thrilling burst for the tape# Kirksey triumphed by three inches. Carr vainly jumped at the last moment. The time, 9 4-55., equalled the Australasian record, which has stood for 30 years. Porritt was third and Morgan fourth. In the 220 yds., Carr, easing up, gained second place in the heat to Morgan. Kirksey was first in his division. In tho final, from a perfect start, Kirksey went rapidly to the front. He was challenged by Carr at 100 yds., but, 50yds. further on, Kirksey again . showed himself the better man and won by four feet. Tiacey (Wellington) was third. The time, 21 4-55., again equalled the Australasian record. The American's victories were very popular. He received an ovation each time. Krogness (America) captured the 120 yds. hurdles. He was too late for the heat, but was allowed to start in the final, in which the others were Wilson (Wellington), Shirley (Auckland), Buckhurst (Canterbury), Porritt (West Coast), Lander (Wellington). and Morgan (Otago). Krogness beat Wilson when the pistol went and, . hurdling beautifully, got home by three inches. Wilson was slightly below form. Time, 15 2-6s. Porritt was third. Results : —
