ASSAULT BY FARMER.

HEAVY FINE IMPOSED. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CAMBRIDGE, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court, Cambridge, yesterday, before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., William Halliday, farmer, of Maungatautati, was charged with assaulting a Maori, named Kowini Walter, with a bridle. The evidence showed that the parties had been engaged in conversation. The native was walking away when the defendant, without any warning, assaulted the Maori by striking him with a bridle. Halliday was fined £6, and ordered to pay expenses, £7 18s.
