The late Olive Schreiner left two unpublished MSS., which are to be pub- • lished in the near future. They contain her "Thoughts on South Africa" and . "Stories, Dreams, and Allegories." •<& . It is not generally known that a freed man of Cicero invented a system of shorthand with which he took down "a verbatim report" of liia master's famous Catalinian oration delivered in 63 B.C. American publishers and booksellers, have combined together for the advertiseing of books, urging to greater general reading and not to the buying Of any particular book. One of the latest devices is a poster pointing out how many million dollars are spent every year in America on cigars, cigarettes, tobacco, and candy, and how pitifully little by comparison is spent on books. The poster concludes : "Several thousands die as a result of using the first four items. Several thousands have come to life as a result of using the i last item." In' a recent instalment of the Farington Diary—appearing in the London Morning Post—reference was made to Beresford's book ( entitled "The Miseries of Human Life," which "sold prodigiously, so as to 1 produce to Beresford a profit of £1000." The full title of the book was "The Miseries of Human Life ; or, the Last Groans of Timothy Testy and Samuel Sensitive with a few supplementary Sighs of Mrs' Testy," London, 1806-7. It was-praised bv Sir Walter Scott and ran into several i editions. • !
