PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION.

GOVERNMENT AND FEES. TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS. A communication was received by tha Auckland University College Council yesterday from the Director of Education, advising that the recommendation by the recent conference of Training College teachers that there should be a professor of education in each University College had been approved by Cabinet, provided, however, that the Government under this arrangement pay no fees for its own Training College students, who attended lectures ty the professor, whose salary the Government was providing. Continuing, the letter stated that the department realised that it might possibly be too late to make a permanent appointment of a professor of education for the coining session, and invited proposals from the council for the teaching of education in the Auckland University College until a permanent appointment could be made. Professor Egerton said he was alarmed at the suggestion that the Government would not pay fees of Training College students as this might mean that the Government would at some later date appoint all professors and the college would receive no fees. • Mr. T. U. Wells welcomed the Government's approval of the proposal and ssid it was a very necessary move, which had been too long delayed. The chairman, the Hon. G. Fowlds, while pointing out that the etiuplation as to fees referred only to the Professor of Education, said the acceptance of such a condition . might result in the whole control of the University eventually coming into the hands of the department. The letter was referred to the Professorial Board for report.
