FOURTH AFRICAN TEST.

M.C.C. ALL OUT FOR 2M.

S. AFRICANS 51 IN THE LEAD.

WARD SCORES SIXTY-FOUR. By Telegraph—Press Association — (Received 4.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. CAPETOWN, Feb. 10. The fourth test match ' commenced at Johannesburg yesterday in hot and oppressive weather. The attendance totalled 7000. The Englishmen batted first, and all were dismissed for 244 runs before the end of the day's play. The South Africans opened their innings land eoorea eight for no loss. The match was continued to-day, when the South Africans made 295. The Englishmen in their * second"' innings had scored six runs without loss when stumps were drawn for the day.

The moderate score of the Englishmen on the opening day was due to correct and, consistent bowling, eupported by brilliant fielding. The wicket was hard and fast, the ball bumping occasionally. Carr, 63, hit seven boundaries, and batted 166 minutes, but the effort was not characteristic of him. Fender. 44, played a breezy innings, his best of the tour. Hall took the last four English wickets at a cost of 20 runs. He bowled with excellent judgment, with a natural body break varied with an off break.

' The weather was again' very hoi today. The attendance ■ numbered 15,000, a record for South Africa. Ward, 64, played an excellent innings, but in the etrly stages Catterall, 32, was erratic. Both batsmen played some delightful strokes, and Ward made many fine nits. Nourse, 51, was solid. He gave a hard chance when six. He requires '45 more runs to complete 200 in test cricket. The Englishmen stood the heat of . to-day well, though in the latter stages they were run .off their legs. -Their, bowling all through was ' steady, but lacked sting.
