CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS.
PO NSONBY DEFEATS EDEN. WETHERALL COMPILES CENTURY. PARNELL BEATS UNIVERSITY. GRAFTON DEFEATS NORTH SHORE. The senior club championship matches, under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association, -were played on the various grounds on Saturday. The weather was fine, the wickets were true and in perfect order, with fast outfields. Th© conditions generally were in favour of the batsmen, who took advantago of the : surroundings to make good individual and team scores: The match between Eden and Ponsonby; was concluded at Eden Park. In" the first innings, on the opening day, Eden had compiled the fin© score of 373, &nd Ponsonby had lost one wicket for. 18 runs only. It looked - a hopeless position for Ponsonby to surpass the high total, but Ponsonby made a great recovery, and by solid batting surpassed Eden's score, compiling 428 runs, and winning by 45 runs. The feature of the Ponsonby. innings was a fine exhibition of batting by-Wetherall, who compiled, with good shots all round the wicket, 143 runs before being caught at point. Other sound performances were ; Smith 65 and McLeod 54. Irving was the most successful bowler for Eden, securing three wickets for 75. The match between Parnell and University resulted in a win for the former team 'by 57 runs on the first innings. On the opening day Parnell scored 235, and University had lost two * wickets for 20. Resuming on Saturday, University raised the total to 178, Kelly playing a , useful innings for 37, R. Garrard 32, and Metge 25. Mann took three University wickets for 43 runs, and , Anthony three for 35. Grafton succeeded in defeating North Shore on the homo ground by 83 runs on the first innings. On the opening day North Shore scored 140, and Grafton had lost five wickets for 63. Resuming on Saturday, Grafton carried the first innings score to 223, Wilson being principal contributor with 62. Sneddon was not out 39. Rowntree 45 and Horspool 36 were the other chief contributors. Elliott took five Grafton wickets for 60 runs. The results of- the senior matches were: — Ponsonby, 428, v.
