STRANGE VAGRANCY CHARGE. ATTEMPT TO PROVE ALIBI. ' A short sitting of the Police Cottrt was held on Saturday morning before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. ~ A charge of vagrancy in that he was. found by night on enclosed premises in Pnriri Avenuo -was preferred against Harold Mardoff Patterson, aged 26. Mr. Dickson appeared for the accused. It was stated that Patterson was found in a girl's bedroom about 3 a.m. on January 27. An employee at the Penrose glass factory stated that the accused, who was a fellow-worker, was asleep in his house at practically the same time as tho offence was alleged to have been committed. The magistrate said he was satisfied the accused was in the girl's room. Patterson was convicted and ordered to ccnie up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and was also ordered to pay costs, £4. DRUNKENNESS AND ASSAULT. John Barrett, aged 63, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, use of obscene language and assault. The police stated that the accused had not previously been in trouble, and that tho assault was a mild one. He was convicted and discharged on the first charge, fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment on the second, and fined £1 for the assault. THREE CASES REMANDED. David Robertson;-aged 28, was charged that, being a person against whom there was a maintenance order, he had attempted to leave New Zealand without having obtained written permission to do so. He was remanded until to-day, bail of £25 being allowed. Oliver Noakes, aged 40, charged with stealing two pieces of crockery, the property of the New land Shipping Company, and William Frederick Moms, aged 38, "charged with stealing property of the Northern Steamship Company to the value of £7, were remanded until Tuesday and Thursday respectively.
