HANDSOME NEW BUILDING.
FLATS IN SHORTLAND STREET.
A handsome addition to the fine buildings which already adorn the city is about to be erected for a private company on a prominent site at the top of Shortland Street. At the corner of that street and Bank Street, and alongside the building of the Auckland Racing Club, excavations have been commenced for the erection of a six-storey structure to contain 24 residential flats, and to be called " The Shortland." ._ .. The frontage to be occupied by the new building will be 65ft. to Shortland Street and the same to Bank Street, while the front elevation will be 72ft. from the pavement. The cost of the building will be about £30,000. In addition to the four flats on each floor, there will be accommodation for janitor, laundries, drying rooms, chutes, automatic elevator, and all modern conveniences, including a hot water service throughout. " The Shortland." which is to be constructed in reinforced concrete, will be modern Gothic in style, with steel windows, lead glassed and with heraldic devices There will be three balconies on each floor, those in the front and on the upper side commanding a view of the sea, and those at the back overlooking -A'.hert Park .'•>■''■■ The architects for the building•. are Messrs! McDonald, Mulhons, and Sholto Smith, and the building contractors, Messrs. N. Cole and Co. It is expected that the construction work will be completed in about 10 months.
