SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC.
GAS COMPANY'S POSITION.
The service rendered to the public by the Auckland Gas. Company was referred to yesterday by Mr. V. J. Lamer, when proposing a vote of thanks to the directors and staff. Mr. Lamer said the company occupied a unique position inasmuch as it ,had held practically a monopoly of the lighting of the city for many years. -Through good, times and > bad it had discharged its obligations to the public in a.fair and liberal spirit. This was evidenced by the ■ recent reductions ~in prices, the company requiring ; only ; a reasonable return lor the capital of the shareholders. He considered the company had a record to be proud of. ■ The chairman, Mr. J. H. Upton, in responding, said the manner in which the business of the company was expanding indicated that the public appreciated the service. Not i only was ; there an ; increase of 9£ per cent, in the output of gas last year, but last month the increase was 12£ : per cent. The number of consumers . last year totalled 35,370, an increase for the year of 1708. Estimating each household at four people, the company was serving about 130,000 people in Auckland. V
