OIL ENGINE IN CANOE.

NAVIGATION OF - WANGA'NUI.

HIRING OUT SIMILAR CRAFT.

NOVEL IDEA FOR TOURISTS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN . CORRESPONDENT. J

TADMAKUNUI. Tuesday.

A party consisting of the American Consul-General, Mr. D. F. Wilbur, the chairman of the Wanganui River Trust-, Mr. J. H. Burnett. Mr. W. A, Vfiitch, the Under-Secretary for Lands, Mr. J. P. Thompson, - and others, travelled'down the Wanganui River at- the end of last week for the purpose of inspecting the reserves. . The journey was made in a large Maori canoe, which wan propelled by oil engines. : The craft held 16 people in all, together with luggage and provisions, and made an excellent trip. The canoe travelled at a great pace once the rapids had been negotiated. It is believed to be the intention of the River Trust to get a fleet of such craft and hire them out to tourists. Mr. Wilbur is of opinion that it would be the best 1 method of popularising the river, as tourists could make a picnic of the trip, stopping where they liked.
