TROUBLE OVER A CHILD.
CHARGE OF ABDUCTION. s A charge of having taken a child d under the age of 14 years from ■ its ,r mother with intent to deprive her of the lawful charge of the child, was preferred against Andrew John Hastie, aged 56, in the Police Court on Saturday before- Mr. '3 J. W. Poynton S.IVM ]- Chief-Detective Mcllveney asked for a d remand till to-day. Ho said that when arrested at Helensville accused said that'
the child was in a homo in Aucklamd. However, it was not. He then said it was in a home in Helensville. Inquiries were being made to find out if this statement was true. In the meantime the chief detective opposed bail. The Magistrate: Yes. He cannot have bail. The child may have been murdered. The mother'saw me and told me what he did and what sort of a man he is. ,t,i Mr. Poynton told accused that lie would have to give the child up or he would find himself in serious trouble. The child was illegitimate and belonged to the mother. ■ . . Accused said that he had told the police where the child was. It wais in a good home. The magistrate had only the mother's word as' to the position. She and accused had been living together within the last three weeks. The Magistrate: You had no right to take the child away. The best thing you can do is to restore it at once. Accused was then remanded till today, bail being refused. .
