DEFENCE SCORES A POINT. LETTER OF A MINE GUARD. .Australian and N.Z. Cabin Association. (Reed. 5.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 6. At the trial at Marion of miners alleged to be implicated in the massacre of strike-breakers at Herrin, Illinois, in June last, the defence scored a victory when it produced in evidence a letterwritten by-a mine guard long before the massacre, showing that machine-guns had been mounted and ; long-distance rifles supplied to v the guards, who/were "anxiously awaiting*a head to appear within three miles for an opportunity to blow it off."
