OPENING AT CHRISTCHURCH. [Bl TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. The chess congress opened to-day with 14 entrants for the championships, including Dunlop, the holder. The principal absentees were Barnes and Davis. The delegates were welcomed by the Hon. 11. F. Wigram, president cf the association, and a preliminary meeting was held to settle the details of the play, which opened this afternoon. The first round resulted as follows.— Phil beat Friberg, Dunlop beat Bcchan, Coombs beat McCrea, Severne beat Roberts, Stevens beat Anderson, md KV.Uinp drew; with Hicks.,
