LAWN TENNIS.
HANDICAP TOURNAMENT. THE OPENING DAY'S PLAY. The annual handicap tournament of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association was commenced on tho Stanley Streec courts yesterday. The weather was very threatening and rain appeared imminent all day; play was not interrupted except for about 10 minutes shortly after noon, when a heavy shower fell. In consequence of the recent rain the courts were somewhat heavy, but they had been well prepared, and played splendidly. Very uood progress was made with the draw, no fewer than 67 marches being completed. Play was interesting', many of the contests providmg close finishes. The Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, and Lady Jellicoe, paid a brief visit to tho courts during the afternoon. Mr. A. C. Johns is the tournament secretary and associated with him are Messrs. A.
