ARSENIC IN COCOA.

COMPANY'S HEAVY LOSS.

350 TONS SACRIFICED.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 18.

Owing to the discovery of one-fortieth of a grain of arsenic per lb. in cocoa, a retail firm was fined 40s and the Rowntree Company, of York, the manufacturers of the cocoa, £20 for selling an adulterated article

The evidence showed that carbonate of potash, used to make the cocoa more digestive, contained a trace of arsenic.

The Rowntree Company was thunderstruck at the discovery and immediately sacrificed 350 tons of cocoa, valued at between £100 and £250 a ton, and endeavoured to collect supplies distributed in the period of two months when the tainted carbonate was used.

A Homo Office expert stated that thiß was the first time in his experience that arsenic had got into food • through carbonate of potash.
