PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
IBY TELSOB.VPH.—OWN COSRESPONbUNT.) TB AKOHA, . TuesdayThe Piako County Council met' yesterday, Mr. F. W. Waters presiding. It was decided to continue negotiations for a loan to redeem the antecedent liability. The necessary steps preliminary to obtaining the sanction of ratepayers in the Ngaru* epecial rating area for a £14,000 metalling loan were taken. The need for proceeding with the erection of the 0 new bridge over the Wairakau stream between Te Aroha and Gordon, was mentioned, and steps will bo taken to put the work in hand as soon as possible, ana obtain the Government grant. It is thus hoped to have the bridge built before the winter rains. Intimation was received from the> Minister for Public Works that he could, not sanction a request for a small grant for widening a road through the Matamata North block, near Waharc-a, as the present 12ft. road. formation is considered quite ample for present requirements. The chairman said it was unfortunate that the council had no alternative but to accept jurisdiction over the road automatically, but the council could not be compelled to expend any rate money on that rood, and cis no rates had yat been collected from the lands affeoted it was extremely unlikely thtvt any expenditure would •be sanctioned. At the request o* the Hirnerahung* Ratepayers' Committee it was decided to supply monthly statements of esoenditur* in the special rating area for reading purpoeas.
