CONVENTIONAL CLOTHES.
AUSTRALIAN CONTROVERSY.
[FROM our. OWV correspondent.] SYDNEY. Dec. U
Clothes for the man has been the subject of a good deal of discussion in at least two of the capitals during the last few weeks.
In Sydney the move for more rational summer clothing was taken up by several members of Parliament, but the publicity given to their efforts was unavailing. Sydney males refused to be converted from their conventional mode of dress-
ing. The move has spread to Melbourne, but j beyond a few martyrs who faded quickly away before the click oi: inquisitive cameras, tbero has been no general trend in favour of more rational ouramer at- i tire. . i The latest controversy has arisen over , a comparison between the immaculately- I attired Englishman and the carelessly : dressed Australian. The first to talk ; about it were three young English officers , who came from India to take up sheep- j farmjing. To them there was a lament- j able absence of the " Bond Street " touch, and it did not take long for a: storm to break. The males ignored the , criticism of their dress, but before many hours after the Englishmen had spoken one of the weaker sex was up in arms, indignantly declaring that Australians were not effeminate.
