GREY RIVER IN FLOOD.
RACECOURSE tNUNDATED.
Heavy rain fell throughout Wednesday last at Greymouth, and caused a serious rise in the Grey River. The river was running very high by noon, and the bar was rendered unworkable. Masses _of driftwood and other debris were carried out to sea in a very swift current. Tho quantity of driftwood showed tho waters up country had risen to an exceptional height. Hie river rose from sto 7 p.m., and news from Omoto at 8 p.m. showed that, through the backing up of tho Omoto Creek, tho racecourse had been flooded. The birdcage was surrounded by water, and tho saddling paddock and the back of the course were submerged The flood showed no signs of abating until midnight, and at one stage 'the water was within a few feet of the level of the Cobden Bridge. In the early hours of Thursday morning tho waters gradually subsided.
