EXCITED COMPETITION.
FINER CROSSBRED WOOLS. RECENT PRICES EXCEEDED. FIRST 9UNEDIN WOOL SALE. [BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DT7NEDIN. Tuesday. The first Dunedin wool sale of the present season was held to-day, when a catalogue of 10,000 bales was submitted to a full bench of buyers. Limits were very elastic, mjany lots being started at from 4d to 8d under the price at which they were eventually knocked down.
One special feature of the sale was the excited competition for the finer crossbred wools. Prices paid for this class were higher than at any previous auction held this season, and possibly higher than has been paid at any auction ever held in the Dominion. Many of the buyers freely admitted that prices given were often 3d to 4d per lb. above what they themselves were prepared to pay. Tliis special competition from a certain section of the trade upset all calculations, and astonished not only the brokers but also many of the buyers. Some clips for which tempting offers had been refused were offered, and fetched from| Id to lid per lb. higher on the average. Local mills were again eager buyers for Merinos and best halfbreds, as well as for good quality bellies and pieces. Canadian and American buyers competed strongly for strong wools of 46's quality and upwards, while Bradford and the Continent took almost everything else. Practically everything submitted was sold. Records for this market were established by-Puketoi Merino, which touuhed 28id while many lots of halfbred and Corriedale made 23£ d to 24£ d. It was the opinion of those who watch wool values closely that Merinos halfbreds were on a par with Christchurch, but that three-quarterbred ,and crossbreds showed an appreciation on that sale. The following is the range of prices:—Merino, 60*s to 64*3: Extra super, 26d to 28-id; super, 24d to 25id; average, 22d to 23id; inferior, 20d to 21id.
