Canterbury, at Chnstchurch. January 5. 6, B—Auckland v. Otago, at Dunedia NOTES AND' COMMENTS. No cricket matches under the aegis of the Auckland Cricket Association will bo played in Auckland for the next three weeks. The senior club championships will not resume until January 13. when the Auckland representative team will have returned from its Southern tour. The charges for admission to the match. M.C.C. team v. Wellington, at the Basin Reserve differ slightly from those charged for the match against Auckland at Eden Park. The Wellington Association has decided that the charges should be one shilling to the ground and two shillings for the stand. The New Zealand Cricket Council expressed the opinion that the charges were too low, and urged that one shilling to the ground and three shillings to the enclosure should be charged. The Wellington association decided that admission should be at the lower rate—-ono shilling and two shillings. , , . __ , The Auckland team which is to meet Wellington in the first Plunket Shield match of the series leaves on Thursday by the .Mam Trunk. Twelve players have been selected and two joint managers who will accompany the team on the Southern tour, togetnor with a number of supporters. _ A team from Auckland University will also travel to Wellington on Thursday to play the annual match against Victoria College during the Christmas holidays. The team will not be. as stronff as usual, owing to the best players being engaged m the Plunket Shield match and others in the Southern tour. The Canterbury Cricket Association has suggested February 23. 24. and 2G for the Piunket Shield match with Wellington, but it was resolved to adhere to the original dates, February 22, 23, and 24. It has now been decided that the minor associations will play an eleven and not thirteen players against the English cricket team in the match at Wanganui. The minor associations' team is: Holland, London, Orr, Orton, and Williams (Wanganui). Gilmour and Hughes (Waikato). Kingston. Ciark. Lambert, and Dr. Maurlsell (Taranaki). Reserve, Wood (Wanganui). . The secretary of the Auckland Cricket Association received a telegram during the progress of the M.C.C. match at -Eden Park on Saturday relative to the Plunket Shield match at Wellington, in which it was stated that Wellington had decided to play the match on the original dates suggested by Auckland—December 23. 25. and 26. The "picnic party," as the English team win designated, by caustic critics in Australia, has demonstrated clearly to New South Wales, in particular, that it is "some picnic party"—of special • merit to dispose of a Now South. Wales team for 201 which included no fewer than eight internationals. We have the assurance of Mr. A. C. Maciljaren that bia side is n. team of. tryers. and from what they have already shown we are more than satisfied. Refuting Australian criticism, which is as unwarranted as it is cheap and casual, the English captain says the, primary obiect of the team is to tour New Zealand, but they are glad of the opportunity of meeting international players. Great benefit is certsin to accrue from the team's tour of New Zealand. This cannot be mensured in matches, or team scores, by wickets or by wins, but by the incentive if will establish in improving the game tb r ougho"t the Dominion. The following are the batting and bowling averages of the members of the Auckland team in the representative matches for last seasoi;:—
PLUNKET SHIELD CONDITIONS. The Plunket Shield is being competed for by the major associations under new conditions this season, the amended rules providing that the trophy shall be held by the team winning the greatest number of matches in a competition for same. Hitherto a team defeating the holders was entitled j to possession of the shield, but it is now necessary for each major association to play the other three associations before I v .7, Inr i er lfl , declared. The four associations I eligible for the competition are Otago. Canterbury, Wellington, and "Auckland, the | present holders. In the event of an equal number of wins | ttui competition is to be decided on the I rules governing the Sheffield Shield competition m Australia. These provide that wnen there is a tie the matter is decided on averages, as follow:—The total runs. ' scored by each team in each match are added together, and the grand total divided by the total number of wicketa lost trius giving the average runs per wicket scored by a, team. The number of wickets lost by their opponents in scoring the runs is then ascertained in order to obtain the average per wicket against each team. The lower average is then subtracted from the nigher, and the team with the highest net average per wicket is declared the winner. In. the event of the closure of an innings L'hff a *E Ph ° d f ?r - lf a b .at_man is unable to bat through injury or illness during a-iy counted 0 " y SCtUal Wickets that fa " a ™ PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES. In view of the forthcoming Plunket Shield matches, the average of Wellington players in last season s shield games will be of interest. They are as follow:—
