THE TORONTO FAIR.
COMPREHENSIVE EXHIBITS.
PERMANENT INSTITUTION.
An interesting outline of the genesis and development of the Toronto Permanent, better known as tho Toronto fair, was given yesterday by Mr. James P. Murray, an associate-director of the exhibition. Established? some 50 years ago, it was a permanent institution and maintained as a city enterprise, though each year from tho first week in August lo the end of September it was taken over by the Exhibition Board.' The fair was really a great extension of the A. ind P. slrow system in New Zealand, with in dustrial and commercial additions. Outside of the agricultural and pastoral divisions of the exhibition, for which pnze3 were provided, the Exhibition Board merely sold space to exhibitors, who looked upon the commercial section ot the fair as a selling, proposition. Manufactures were advertised and sold. The exhibition had been self-supporting for years, and had even made a profit of £50,000 in a single year. It was mentioned by Mr. Murray that it was h'.ned in Toronto to establish a Dominions' section at the exhibition where each of the British Dominions could make a permanent display. This was probably a matter for Government consideration. He expressed the opinion that Auckland had a great future before it as regards population and industrial development. It was now almost exactly at the same stage as Toronto when it started its permanent exhibition. There was clearly a pressing for closer co-operation between the Dominions.
