MARSHAL FOCH'S REPLY.
NOTHING to withdraw.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 4.5 p.m.) PARIS, Dec. 16Marshal Focli, referring to Mr. Lloyd George's article, said that he withdrew nothing he had spoken or written regarding the Rhine frontier. Lo Journal points out that Marshal Foch, in official memoranda, dealt exclusively with the question of France's security, and declared that only military occupation of the Rhine could safeguard Franco against further invasions. The newspaper also recalls M. Poincare s letter addressed to M. Clemenceau in 1910, in which he asked for the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine until Germany fulfilled her obligations, and points out that M. Poincare specified that the occupation should bo provisional and not related to annexation.
