THE YACHTING SEASON.

SANDERS CUP TRIALS. SUCCESS OF IRON DUKE. The second trial race to decide the Auck. land defender of the Sanders Memorial Cup in the 14ft one-design class wag held on Saturday afternoon. The course was from starting: line oS King'r, Wharf, thence round the Sandspit beacon, ihpnce round the Bastion beacon, back round Sandspit beacon to starting line, once round.

The race was timed to start at 1.50 p.m. but owing to the absence of wind the officials decided to delay the start until 2 p.m., when a nico breeze from the north west set in. On the fall of the last flanJoan and Rona crossed the lino together' and Iron Duke 5s later. Rona was first to get .her spinnaker drawing, though Iron Duke actually liad her light sail hoisted first. On the run to the Sandspit beacon Rona drew away from the other boats. Joan led Iron Duka, but was unable to get very far ahead, through the latter blanketing her rival. Approaching the beacon, how* ever, Joan managed to draw clear of Iron Duke, and picked up on the Rona. Th e last-named made the mistake of taking i n her spinnaker as she approached ths beacon, and was passed by Jotm. which carried right through with her light sail, as did Iron Duke. Ronuding the beacon ths times wore: Joan, 2h 2om 3Ss; Rona, 24m ss: Iron Duke-, 2h 24m 50s. The wind now fell light and drew more northerly, which gave, tho boats another run to the Bastion mark. They had not gone very far, however, before Uiey were becalmed for somo minutes. Joan was still leading, with Rcrna and Iron Duke following in that order. When the wind set in .again, it came out from the west. Iron Duke got the breeze first, and ran past Rona. A little later the latter again overhauled Iron Duke, and when Joan got the true wind a good ' spin to the Bastion mark was witnessed. Rona rounded it at 2b. 'Ifim 14s; Joan at 2h 46m 16s: and Iron Duke at 2h 46m 455. Joan, however, had the best position, and when they hauled on the wind 3he was in tho lead. Thi;, however, was only temporary, as Rona sailed right through Joan's lee in the next minute. Anticipating a change of wind the Iron Duke threw right round the mark and stood on port tack, the others following a little later. Rona almost got in irons and lost her position at this stage. Some cross tacking took place between the boats. Iron Duke holding her own. Approaching tho Sandspit beacon Rona passed Joan. Bv this time the '.find had shifted to the .north-east, and as the course was to have been a windward and leeward one, it was decided to send the boats round Resolution buoy, thence round Rough Sock beacon in Rangitoto Channel, back to starting line. The competitors were sent away to a good start at 5.40 p.m., Iron Dune crossing the line first, followed by Rona and Joan. The last-named set Jer. spinnaker at the start, Rona following suit on reaching the eastern tide deflector. Iron Duke, which carried her leading; jib instead of her spinnaker, showed the way to Resolution buoy, but just before reaccing it, sh» was passed by the other two boats. Ths wind now began to peter out, and the boats just managed to round the buoy m follows: Rona, 4h lm 12s; Joan, 4h lm oOs; Iron Duke, 4h lm 455. The next half hour saw the boats ma-ke little or no headway, and the officials. Messrs. J. B. Johnston. W. A. Wilkinson and A. Deacon,, called the race off.

POWER-BOAT ASSOCIATION. HARBOUR RACES. The New Zealand Power-boat Association held two races on Saturday afternoon over a harbour course, starting and finishing oS the end of King's Wharf. The first race, which took the form of * general handicap, brought out Fleetwing, Valeka, Surf, Adelaide, and Lily Meg The boats were sent away promptly, according to their handicaps, which were given at the start. The finishing times were: Surf, 3h 12m 14s; Fleetwing, 3h 14m; Adelaide, 3h 14m 40s: Wailani, 3h 15m ss; "Valeka, 3h 15m 445: Lily Meg. 3h 20m 7s. Result: Surf 1, Fleetwing 2, Adelaide 3. ; Championship pennants were awarded m. V this event as follows:—Under 20 knots. Fleet wing; under 12 knots. Surf;_under 9 knots, Valeka; under 8 knots, Adelaide. The class race was started at the conclusion of the general handioap, the same boats competing in this event under a different handicap. Fleetwing, the scratch boat, caught the Surf shortly after passing the Sandspit beacon, and the others after reaching Devonport, with the exception of Adelaide. The finish between these two boats was very exciting, Fleetwing gaining the verdict by one second. The times were:— Fleetwing, 4h Oin 6s; Adelaide. 4h 0m 7s; Surf, 4h lm Ds; Valeka, 4h lm 295; Wailani. 4h lm 535. Result: Fleetwing 1. Adelaide 2, Surf 3. Lily Meg did not finish. _ The officials in charge were Messrs. F. Chapman, E L. Buchanan, and A. J. Collings. » VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB. CRUISING AND HARBOUR RACES. The Viotoria Cruising Club held a S® n * eral handicap for the Mackay Memorial Shield to Awaroa Ba», Waiheke, on Saturday afternoon, for the larger yachts and also harbour races for the smaller classes. The weather was light and variable and at times calms were experienced, which prevented a number of the boats from finishing. At the conclusion of the race a social and dance was held in" Gordon's hail. The commodore, Mr. T._ L. Thompson, was in charge of the social arrangements./ and there was a good attendance of yachfcimen and visitors. The club's concert party gave a number of musical and vocal items, which weve much appreciated. The officials in charge of the racing were: Starter and judge for harbour races. Air. P. Bocmetja; timekeepers, Messrs. E. urnfiths and W. J. Matthews: judge for cruising races, Mr. T. L. Thomson; timekeepers. Messrs. W. E. Uttmg, and J. Keegan. Details are as follows:— THE CRUISING RACE. The cruising race, which brought out 19 competitors, was started at 2.45 p.m., before a light north-westerly breeze.
