WEST END CLUB.

S. G. DOBSON'S TROPHIES.

The West End Rowing Club rowed a set of trial fours on Saturday for trophies presented by Mr. S. G. Dobson. This was the *ixtli get of the season, and the last trials until after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Splendid water conditions prevailed, and an exceptionally keen set of races were witnessed. The Btandard of rowing was very higfh, and tho fact that many new men were lacing, speaks volumes for the caro exercised in coaching by the club officors. Tho usual course from the reclamation to the boathouse was used, and Mr. J. H. Bigelow acted as starter, and Mr. N, S. Cossey as judge. The crews that faced the starter in the first heat were; Johnson. Shilling. G. Conway, Fraser; Newdick, Edwards, O'Connell, N. Conway. Tho crews were quickly desSatched, and an even pull ensued to St. iary's Wharf. Johnson then drew ahead, and despite a determined challenge by Newdick, improved his advantage, and won by half a length. The three crews in the second heat were: Bright, Trevarthen, Reavey, Beuth: Culpan, Steele, W. Conway, C. "Wright: Courtney, Norden. Spencer, Butler. When tho flag dropped, Culpan's crew jumped away, and rowing . well together, gained a lead. Passing the wharf the three crews closed up somewhat, but in tho final spurt, Culpan drew out and won by three parts of a length, with Bright second, an<k Courtney, a quarter of a length away, thira. The crews in the third heat ■were: Ryan. L. Skinner, Hewitt, A. Wilson; Graham, Cleal, Barber, Beuth. The crewß jumped, away together, and raced on even torms for half tho journey. Ryan then forged ahend, and won by three parts of a length. The crews that faced the starter in the final were stroked by Culpan, Hyau, ond Johnson. The crews were sent away in fine style, and were practically even till the half-way mark. Culpan then took the lead, and the other two challenged. Passing the wharf the leader's chances looked a certnintv, Ryan came with a great spurt and rapidly closed on the leador and the- race seemed his. The last half-dozen strokes on the part of Culpan's crew produced a wonderful effort. The boat jumped away and crossed the line amid great excitement, with three-quarters of * length to spare. Ryan was second, Johnson the same distance away thi r d. The effort of Culpan's fouv showed clearly the advantage of thrpwinff on evnry ounce of weight instead of quickening the stroke. The winning crew waa:— Cnlyn.n (4). Steele (3). W. Conway (2), C. Wright (1). M. Conway (cox).
