BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEWMARKET.

The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening. There were present: The Mayor, Mr S. Donaldson, and Mestirs. P, S. Boon©, H. J. Cooper, N. Kellaway. F. J. O'Meara, W. Sawbridge, A. B. Seccombe, G. E. Smerdon, and T. J. Watts. A letter from Mr. Ai Kent, chairman of the Finance Committee, asking for leave of absence until the expiration of his term of office, evoked considerable discussion, but it was finally agreed, with one dissentient, and one member not voting, that leave be granted. A deputation from the Newmarket Business. League requested a parking place for cars. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee, with power to act.

BIRKENHEAD. The Birkenhead Borough Council mot last evening. There were present: The Mayor, Mr. A. Hadfield, and Mossrs. A. Bartlett, E. C. "Walton, F. W. McGowan, L. R. L. Moller, T. Smith, 'R. Taylor, A. Turner; and P. H. Hoy ward. The council passed votes of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. Clement L. Wragge, Mrs. W. F. Hammond, and Mrs. N. Swindail. It was resolved to take steps to have the control of tho scenic reserve in Victoria Street West vested in the council. The commissioner of Crown lands wrote stating that the matter of securing an additional entrance to Kauri Gully scenic reserve had been abandoned. Mr. Walton said he did not like the Birkenhead Borough Council being pointed at in the letter as being directly responsible for the failure to secure the land needed. It was stated that 2,500,060 gallons of water had been used during the past month. Tt was resolved to put down two sections of a chain each in the main road in asphalt, as an experiment, the Mayor stating that th« council could do this work for £52 ss. The Devonport Ferry Co. agreed to alter tho time of the 10.45 p.m. boat from Auckland to 11 p.m.. provided no objection was made from Novthcote or Chelsea.
