THE EDUCATION BOARD.

UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS.

QUESTION OF RETENTION.

GRANTS FOR LARGER SCHOOLS.

The Auckland Education Board met yesterday, those present being Mr. J. D. McKenzie, acting-chairman, Mrs. N. E Ferner, Messrs. W. J. Campbell, J. P. McPhail, G. Brownlee, R. C. Smith, G. W. Murray, J. Boddie, A. E. Manning, A. Burns, and H. S. W. King. A request that further attention be given to the matter of the enlargement of the Kohimarama School was made by a deputation from the local committee, headed by Mr. G. Hogan. The latter sjioke of the rapid growth of the district, and the fact that many summer visitors would remain permanently in the district if there were adeqvato school accommodation. The secretary stated that an application for an additional two rooms at the school had been forwarded to tho department in September, and no further action could be taken until a reply wa3 received.

Tho views of the board in connection with the employment of uncertificated teachers were sought in a memorandum from tho department. It was stated that owing to the large number of training college students who would be available at the end of the year, the board would bo able to appoint, trained certificated teachers to many schools where at present there aro untrained, uncertificated teachers. Some of, the uncertificated teachers were highly efficient, however, and having filled the breach faithfully when certificated teachers were not available, were deserving of consideration. The matter was referred to the senior inspector. Conserving Finance. A memorandum wus received from the department stating that the applications to hand far exceeded the sum that would bo available for allocation for school purposes during the current financial year. The beard was. therefore, asked to suihmit a list of applications showing tho order of urgency. The advisory inspector is to report on tho matter. The constitution of a separate school district at Takanini was authorised by the board, the appointment of a local manager being deferred. A matter long in dispute, the removal of the Maramariia School, was finally settled by the receipt of a telegram from the department, stating that no further objection to this course would be raised. The architect %vas accordingly instructed to arrange for the removal of tho building to the new site. The supervisor of the manual and technical branch reported that 52 candidates had passed the first-aid examination at the Hamilton Technical School, seven gaining first-class certificates. Grants were notified by the department as follows: —Kowhai School. £800 for extension of portable building ; Mangatangi (Pokeno), £405 for erection of school building; Ngatea (Hatiraki Plains), £417 toward cost of additional class room for primary department: Okahukura, £367 toward additional class room; To Pahu (Hamilton), £523 toward acquisition of school site and cost of building.
