MATERNITY MORTALITY.

DISTRIBUTION OF CASES.

INSTITUTION AND HOME. [BX TELUaSAPK. —PBBBO ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday.

A meeting of the Board of Health waa held at Wellington to-day, the Hon. 0. J. Parr, Minister for "Health, presiding. The question 08 carrying out the recommendations of the recent commission on maternity mortality was discussed. Some interesting figures were furnished by the Health Department, showing the number of deaths from puerperal septicaemia and how they were distributed between public hospitals, private hospitals, and private homes. The statistics indicated that a much larger proportion of maternity mortality occurred when the confinements took place in private homes. The board asked the department for further information with regard to the inspection of such cases. The recent report on venereal diseases furnished by the committee of the board was also discussed at some length. The board unanimously adopted the report, and eulogistic references were made to the good work done by the chairman, the Hon. W. H. Triggs, and the members of the committee. A resolution was passed recommending the Government to introduce legislation as early as possible on the lines laid down in the report, which includes a recommendation that notification in cases of venereal disease be made compulsory.
