TRIBUTE TO IMMIGRANTS.

MR. W. NOTON'S EULOGY. PART IN DEVELOPMENT. Not the least interesting phase of the address, delivered in St. Mary's Hall, Manukau Road, last evening by Mr. W. Noton, official Libera! candidate for Parnell. was his appreciative allusion to farm immigrants from Britain. Referring to the British overseas scheme, he said it had been arranged to spend £3,000,000 a year in sending out the rig.it type of uiunii grant, and the British Government, stipulated that none of thos? men should be placed on improved land. Mr. Noton recalled the old Homesteide Act," under which men ' from Britain -were granted land. Those early immigrants, he remarked, went into the dense bush, wilt slab houses, and cleared xway the scrub. They were men of grit fron England, and to-day New Zealand waited more men of that type. By opening u.p the virgin land their products would be doubled; more monev would come into the country, and with increased spending powere the Dominion's secondary industries would flourish. Replying to questions, Mr. Noton said he was not in sympathy with Civil servants linking themselves with the Alliance of Labour—a reply which was loudly ap,plauded. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to, and of confidence in, Mr. Noton.
