THE CANTERBURY MEETING. GASBAG WINS THE OUP. DEAD HEATS IN TWO EVENTS [bt telegraph.—press association.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting waa continued to-day in fine weather. The Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe were present. The attendance was below that of the two previous days. The totalisator investments were £ 55.515, compared with £63,669 on the third day last year. Results: — PORT COOPER HURDLES. 1| miles.— Cerberus (W. Scobie), 1: Fisher, 2; Passenger, 3. The conditions were very pleasant for the hird day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's leoting. The racing was easily the best of he week. The Canterbury Cup and Oaks, a spite of -small fields, provided stirring on tests. The scratching of-'Trespass and Cupidon educed the field for the Canterbury Cup by Dur. There was a great battle for favouritiim. Gasbag winding up with a slight call ver Bonnie Winkie. The race was full of xcitement from start-to finish. Winning lit pulled himself to the front, and soon pened out a gap of ten lengths from Gas>ag, who was just clear of the other pair, .he field started to close up at the end of mile, and six furlongs from home Bonnie Vinkie was alongside Gasbag, two lengths iehind Winning Hit. The last named was one with at the entrance to the straight, rhere Royal Star made a momentary move. ?he other pair then settled down to a des>erats struggle. There was.nothing, in it at he distance, but Gasbag wore Bonnie Winkie (own and won by «, short length. Royal Star waa four lengths away and Winning iit three lengths further back. The time 3m 625) was an Australasian record. Tressayr and Sunny Loch were scratched br the Jockey Club Handicap. Anomaly tos a strong favourite, with The Hawk and 1 Sing's Trumpeter also well backed. Anomaly, rhe Hawk. Songbird, and Martian Miss showed, the way to the straight, where' Pluto moved up. Pluto waa with the front lot at the distance, but tided*.out, leaving The Hawk and Anomaly to dead heat tot first place. It looked as if The Hawk's rider waa over-confident. Pluto should be au the better for the race. Scrimmage and King's Trumpeter got off badly. Scrimmage running a great race to .finish fourth. Royal Mao and Bon Spec were left altogether, The Oaks attracted only four runners, bul it was an exciting race. Ardour set tho pace, imt Enthusiasm joined her six, furlongs from home, and Taoimr, for the straight. Ardour was beaten. .Gold Light then moved up, and a desperate battle ensued. Gold Light appeared to have .a elirht advantage at the distance, but from theft* they ran home linked together, erring tho very rare spectacle of the seoond dead heat for the day.
