RIVER CARGO TRANSPORT. [JIX TSLSOBAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) TE AKOHA. Wednesday.

An inspection of the Waihou River between Paeroa and To Aroha is to be made this week by an officer of the Public Works Department to take fresh Boundings in order to ascertain tho prospecta of a continuance of cargo transport up the river during the coming dry weather. When the inspection was miide a year or bo ago the l'e Aroha Chamber- of Commerce protested that the soundings were not taken at the worst places. The chamber asked for another inspection, and offered to send a representative who knows the river to point out the shoals. Jt was contended that at times there is not more than 2ft. 6in. of water, thur, hampering cargo transport. The department's officer had reported that nowhere was there les3 than 4ft. of water in the channel.

Mr. Samuel, Sellars, who has been .injector of permanent way for the Thames-Morrinsville-Rotonm section of railways for the past four years, retired on Saturday on superannuation after 40 years' service. Pie is being succeeded temporarily by Mr. Wilkinson. Mr. Sellara intends to continue his residence in Te Aroha.

-A very successful garden party was held sast Saturday at Aroha View, Herriesville, 1 to augment the fund , being raised for the purchase of a motor ambulance for this district. About £25 was raised.

Mr. D. M. Mcintosh, chief returning officer for th« Tauranga electorate and postmaster at'Tauranga, has been spending a few days in this district arranging details in connection with the forthcoming general "elections. The Elstow Drainage Board's engineer has been authorised to take further steps toward inducing the department to contribute toward the cost of extending a drain beside the Tirohia-Tahutia road, which will provide partial drainage for a considerable area of Crown land in the neighbourhood.

Entries are coming in freely for the annual show of (be Thames Valley A., P. and H. Association at To Aroha. It is expected that last year's record will be exceeded.

At the annual meeting of the To Aroha Croquet Club the election ..of officers resulted :—Patron, Sir William Herries; president. Mrs. W. Cullon; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Rayner and Noonan; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. J. Meikle; committee, Mesdames Everitt, T. Stanley, K. Dukes. Daly, and Monson. Several new members were elected.

The Te Aroha bowling team to compete for the Goldfields Stars at Matamafa next Saturday is J. Bougen, E. H. Hankins, A. B. Hinton, and H. C. Petersen (skip).
