THE NEW SEAMEN'S AWARD.

The seamen and firemen *nr;aged on the Northern Steamship Company's steamer Clansman gave 24 hours' notica yesterday to be paid off. The time will expire this afternoon, and unless the men change their minds or a new crew is engaged tho steamer will not sail for Bussell at 7 p.m. to-<lay, her scheduled time. No reason is given by the men for handing in their notice, but they state that their action is not due to any trouble oh board the vessel. They declare they are quite satisfied with the ship and officers but they refuse to discuss the matter 'fur! ther. The Seamen's Union officials are equally reticent. It is understood that the action of the Clansman's crew is connected wiih the new senmen's award, which will come into force to-morrow. Under i.his award the wages of able seamen and firemen have been reduced by £1 5s Bd, and those of ordinary seamen by £1 Os 8d a month. There is also a reduction of 3d an hour ' in the overtime rates. Inquiries made on all the vessels in port yesterday showed that the Clansman was the only vessel on which any action had been taken.
