CHARGED WITH ASSAULT
INCIDENT !N TAXI-CAB. TWO YOUTHS FOR TRIAL, i OTHER OFFENCES ADMITTED A sequel to an assault, on a taxi-driver in Eden Vale Road. .Mount Eden, on the night, of Labour Day, was tho appearance of ■ fcwo youths, Atiwl -John George Connelly aged 16. and Frederick CH«e Arns, aged'l7 (Mr. Allan Moody), in the Police Court Yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.'M. charged with having assaulted [William John Morris with intent to rob. William John Morris, taxi-driver, said that about, 10.40 p.m. on Labour Day, accused him to drive them from tho Customs "Street rank to Mount Eden. Connellv sat in tho back seat and Arns in tho front. When in Eden \ale hoad Arns said "Right- oh," and witness started to pull up. -At. the same tune lie was struck a heavy blow on tho head by Cumellv, and was rendered partmJy unconscious for a few seconds. the blow was struck with a piece of wood, similar to, „■» rolling pin, which was broken by the force of the blow. Witjieia applied the brakes and jumped out of the car. which travelled on and struck a tolcirraph pest, being damaged to the extent of £15. Just before the car struck, Arns attempted to take the wheel, but witness prevented him doing so. ■Roth accused then jumped out ol the car and ran up tho road. Witness chased them, and called out, "Hands np, or 111 thoot," Accused then stopped but as witness was still dased by the blow he had received he was unable to detain the youths, who ran away, though fitness succeeded in tripping one ol them. Statements made by accused vo. tne police, admittin:; the offence, were produced. They had agreed on a # course of action before engaging tne taxi. One | lad had given himself up to the police shortlv after midnight, admitting Ins I share'in the assault/ The other youth., i according to bis statement, slept out that j nirht under a, fence, and was arrested { next morning. . """ The facts disclosed were that j stole the money, eave £5 10s to j Arr:s, and they both came to Auckland j next da v. Accused pleaded guilty and sentence I teas deferred pending tho Supremo Court j proceedings.
