BUMPER FRUIT CROP.
PROSPECTS FOR SEASON.
" I have been much impressed by the appearance of the southern orchards, and can say that they have never looked better,"" remarked Mr. A. J. Campbell, Director of Horticulture, when questioned in Wellington as to his impressions on his recent visit to the Nelson Province. " There, as in other districts which I have visited the blossom is very promising, and I should say that thero is every prospect of a bumper fruit season." Mr. Campbell went on to say that it was a little early yet to speak with absolute certainty;" but that the season's yield would depend upon the weather for the next few weeks, which will be the critical time until the blossom is fully matured. Dull and drizzling weather is bad for fruit trees, as it interferes with fertilisation. On the subject of the Government's decision to advance £5000 to fruitgrowers on easy terms to assist them in the manuring, 'Mr. Campbell remarked that the growers were availing themselves of this, and that many orchards were showing much improvement.
