"FEVER" IN PLANTS.

VALUABLE DISCOVERY. LONDON, Oct. 10. Two So-nth African botanists, Dr. and Mrs. Pole-Evans, in tht> course of an investigation on behalf of the South African Government, in connection with the export of South African citrus fruits, have msde an important discovery. Experiments with oranges and grapefruit in London showed a definite rise in tho temperature of plant- tissue when infected with a parasitic fcngus. This haß never been previously detected in the case oIE plants, which is remarkable, since it is analogous to the fever that follows on infection in animals. The discovery not only opens up a new field for research on plant pathology, but it has & direct bearing on the problem of fruit storage and transport.
