CITY COUNCIL VACANCY.
EIY-ELECTION NECESSARY,
v. ' THREE CANDIDATES FOR SEAT.
Nominations for the vacancy on the Auckland City Council closed at noon yesterday, the candidates being Messrs. C. H. Furness, J. J. Sullivan, and A. Thompson. The by-election will be held next Wednesday. The returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, stated yesterday that the electors' roll contained some 32,000 names.
Candidates may withdraw three clear days before the election, which in this case allows up to Saturday. A prescribed form for withdrawal is provided in section 12 of the Elections and Polls Act, 1908, but whether candidates may also claim a refund of their deposit of £3 is not dear. No deposit, is required from candidates for power boards. " : \1 The cost of a City Council by-election is estimated at about £400, but of this amount about £20 would be saved in this case by the fact that tho Auckland Electric Power Board is holding an election on the same date. Expense already incurred in connection with the City Council by-election amounts to about £80, chiefly for advertising and printing. A supplementary roll had to be specially prepared, and the ballot papers ar© already being printed. The saving represented by the of two candidates at this stage would therefore be about £300.
