EXTENT OF REDUCTION.
TOTAL SAVING OF £622,000.
TKIBUTE TO BOARD'S WORK.
[»X TELSG.BAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Referring to the new freight contract in the House of Representatives to-night the Prime Minister said the freight on butter was to be 5s per box. the same as last season. The cheese freight was 1 l-16d per lb., plus 10 per, cent, a reduction of one-eighth of a penny. Grouping beef, mutton, and lamb, which were the chief itemn, the new contract meant a reduction of freight charges amounting approximately to £497.000. and on other meats £50,000. In addition therp would be a saving of £75,000 on cheese, or a total of £622,000. Mr. Massey congratulated the board on the success of its negotiations, and congratulated the producers, who would reap material benefit therefrom. He hoped there would be a corresponding decrease in freezing charges. If this could be obtained the total saving to the producers would' go far to restore New Zealand to its pre-war condition of prosperity. The board's work in this connection had been worth millions to the country.
