REPUBLIC NOT WANTED.
DE VALERA'S ADMISSION. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Oct. 15.
The Irish Government has issued its First White Paper, -which deals -with tho captured correspondence between Do Valera and other prominent republicans. One of Do Valera's letters recommends the executive of tho irebel army to take contra] and assume responsibility, enabling De Valera and his colleagues to resign as public representatives. 3)o Valera points ont that he and his colleagues have all the public responsibility bnt no voice and no authority. If he could not get the position made clear he threatened to resign publicly, despite the harm such a; step would do the Republican cause. Tho letter continued: "We cannot point to authority derived from the majority of the people; we could not as a government refuse to allow the people to decide by vote between the two governments. If the people were given the decision that would mean the woTst of all, namely, turning down the republic."
