THE LIQUOR QUESTION.
DEBATE IN THE BYNOD.
FOR AND AGAINST PROHIBITION. The debate on prohibition was continued by the Anglican Synod last evening. Speaking to the motion, that the church people of the dioceso be recommended to vote for prohibition at the forthcoming poll, Mr. C. J. Tonka said he thought everyone would have been seized with the enormity of the evils of the liqttor traffic. He maintained that the proportion of want, degradation, and crime caused by drink would bo found to be exceedingly high. t Why should the Church want to save its face on the question? It should come right ouft on the matter and say what it really meant. The Rev. H. Mason said that, like many of their English friends present, he was against prohibition when he came to the Dominion. He had, however, been gradually forced into being a prohibitionist. He had not known one prohibition order to be effective, so that the drunkard could not be reformed that way. Those who voted for continuance took the responsibility for the pitiable condition of the victims of drirti:. The Rev. R. Shaw said he did not understand why the whole country should be put under prohibition to bring relief to wle seven per cent, of the community who were suffering from drink. Before taking the drastic step of prohibition, the Carlisle system of hotel control should bo thoroughly gone into. The synod then adjourned.
