INJURIES END FATALLY.
DEATH OF MR. A. McMATH.
SEQUEL TO TRAMWAY ACCIDENT. As a result of injuries received by being knocked down by a tramcar on the evening of October 7, Mr. Archibald McMath, aged 42, a married man formerly resident at Schofield Street, Grey Lynn, died at the hospital on Saturday morning. The accident occurred in Queen Street, near the Wellesley Street intersection, as an outward-bound Mount Eden car was slowing down to turn the corner, and waa travelling at about four miles an hour. It was stated by witnesses that Mr. McMath dismounted from the car and attempted .to cross in front of it. Although tfhi» motormaa, Mr. H. Hipwell, immediately applied the brakes, it. was impossible to avoid striking Mr. McMath. The latter was admitted to the hospital suffering from a fractured skull and, after lying in a critical state for a week, he saccumbed.
An inq nest wag opened before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., on Saturday afternoon for formal identiiication and was adjourned sine die.
Deceased's twin brother, Mr. William MeMath, of Ponsonby, met his death at Takapuna nearly two years in a similar manner. The accident also occurred on a Saturday, the date being December 4, 1920. Mr. MeMath left his seaside home at about nine o'clock that evening to get a newspaper, and he was either orossing the line or running alongside it when he was knocked down, and run over by an engine and three cars. There was a remarkable likeness between the two brothers and one was often mistaken for the other.
