REMOVALS FROM ROLLS.
NOT A CRIMINAL MATTER. [BY. TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. It was stated in the House on Monday by the Minister for Justice, Hon. E. P Lee, that he had consulted the Commissioner of Police with regard ix> the reported case of "roll stuffing" at Auckland, and that as a result he had determined in future to have such charges dealt with under the Crimes Act. bo that imprisonment would be imposed in the event of a conviction. This matter' was again referred to in the House to-day by Mr. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo), who asked the Minister whether ho would also bring under the notice of the Commissioner of Police the fact that the names of thousands of electors h#.d been struck off-the rolls for no good reason. The Hon. E. P. Lee said he had not referred the matter to the commissioner and he did not intend to do so. This complaint did not come under police jurisdiction, but was entirely a matter for the officers of the department conducting the electoral system- It did not come within tho scop© of the criminal law.
