LIFTED FROM OCEAN BED.

LONG-LOST SHIP'S ANCHOR.

A ship's anchor, which had been lying at the bottom of the sea for a number of years, with 60 fathoms of cable at. tached, was accidentally recovered off Aitutaki, Cook Islands, recently by the steamer Flora, which arrived at Auckland yesterday. The Flora had been lying off Aitutaki, loading fruit, and when leading the port her anchor .fouled the lost cable at the bottom of the sea.

Tho Mora's anchor hooked the cable at about the 15-fathom shackle and brought it to the surfacc, where it was "secured, and afterwards lifted on board. The anohoi; and chain aro believed to have been lost from the steamer Navua about 14 years ago. Both were encrusted with about an inch of coral.

It is somewhat remaxkable that they had not been hooked up before, as the Union Company's steamers visiting tSlie port named have anchored at practically the same position for years. The recovered anchor, apart from the chain, weighs about' two and a-half tons, and considerable difficulty was experienced in. lifting it on to tho Flora's deck. It first had to be cleared from the vessel's own anchor and then hoisted on deck with the cargo gear. X ■
