ELECTORAL ACT BREACH.
WRONG NAME ON ROLL.
FINE IMPOSED ON WOMAN.
A prosecution for a breach of the regulations under the Electoral Act -was heard in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poyntonj, S.M. Lilian Edith Isabel Tolley (Mr. Cahill) was charged with having caused a false name to be entered on the electoral roll.. A plea of guilty was entered. Defendant was not present jn Court, and in explaining her absence counsel said that she waa seriously ill. The facts, as stated by counsel, were that defendant was .a married woman, separated from her husband, and living at a boarding house under another name. A jiostal official called in connection with the enrolment of electors, and, not wishing the proprietress to know that she was not using her correct name, she gave the name by which she was known At the hoarding house. As this waS not on the roll, it was entered. Subsequently she went to a post office for where she was known correct name. 'She was asked by the electoral official there if*she was on the roll, and when it was found that her correct name was not on the roll she foolishly allowed herself to be again enrolled under her correct name. Counsel said the woman had not voted for years, and, had not intended to vote. There :io suggestion of " roll stuffing. 1 " H«r action was due solely to prevent it being kr<own that she was not' living under her correct name. , • ; - The magistrate imposed a fine of £1 and costs.
