MEMORIAL SANCTUARY.
PAPAKURA CEREMONY.
FOUNDATION STONE LAID.
The English' Church community of Papakura assembled in large numbers on Saturday to witness the laying of the foundation stone of their war memorial. Tho ceremony was conducted by the Right Rev. Bishop of Auckland, assisted by the vicar of the- parish, Rev. W. C. Wood, and Rev. Mr. Greenwood, Vicar of Devonport. The- -visiting clergy present were, Revs. M. D. Boyes, W. H. Rattray. H. M. Smythe, C. A. B. Watson, and C. A. Vaughan. Tho memorial sanctuary, constituting tho first part of the permanent, church, is being built on the eastern end of the present wooden building, to a design furnished by. Mr. G. S. Goldsbrc-'. The material being u»jd is a granite stone, obtained locally. A memorial tablet will be built into the south wall, containing the names of the men from the parish who fell in the Great War.
The foundation stone, presented by Mr. W. H. Feldon, bears the inscription: — " This sanctuary was erected as a. thankoffering to Almighty God for peace and victory, and in memory of the men from this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-19." In a receptacle at the back ol the stone was placed a document setting forth the history of the sanctuary, a c»py of the New Zealand Hebald of that date, abo a copy of the Church Gazette, and coins of the cnrrent year. After the dedication of the stone the bishop delivered a short address, in the course of which he expressed his great satisfaction that the parishioners! . had made their war memorial a portion of a permanent church A very impressive ceremony was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem.
