BEAUTIES OF THE WAITEMATA.
Sir, —I pretumo if His Worship tho Mayor's scheme to found a beautifying society in Auckland proves successful, the stars and tho seagulls that «jcrea.m above the waters of the Waitemata will witness a quaint race—the Beautifying Society ■working furiously o preserve what is left, of the old .loveliness of Auckland, and the Auckland Harboor Board defying tho Government, the world, the flesh and the devil to create their curious harbour. I am not going to suggest that the contest is between (Hod and the devil, because the devil often shows a jpntTy face to start with and the Harbour Board's child is but an ugly wench. But I do say that God, who made the shores of the Waitemata lovely, will stand by the Beautifying Society and help them on their way rejoicing to a glorious climax when Auckland will take her obvious place as the loveliest city in the wide, wide world. But I suspect this will be 50 years henc£, when the present members of the Auckland Harbour Board sleep with their fathers. It is with some tremors that I send this letter, because I believe there are some folk who still think that a love of beauty in the heart of a man labels him an aesthetic crank. Yet tho answer to the question, why has Auckland forged ahead of other New Zealand cities? is— because of her natural beauty fold charming climate. Bloody Queen Mary suggested that the word Calais might be found written on her heart; Campbell's Point should be found carved very deep on the hearts of the Auckland Harbour Board members.
