BOXING AT HOBART.
ALL NEW ZEALANDERS WIN. GOOD FIGHT BY HANSEN. A. and N.Z. HOBART. Sept. 26. The opening session of the Australian and New Zealand amateur boxine championships provided fine sport. The New Zealamlera acquitted themselves! -preditably, training all their fights. The contest* resulted as follows:— Light-weight. —McDonald (New Zealand) heat i - J. Thompson (Queensland) on pointe. Bantam-weights.—A. J. Peet (Victoria) defeatod R. H. Wood (Tasmania), on points; V. Nolan (Queensland) beat G. P. Boyton (New South Wales) on points. Feather-weights.—B. Bistuccia (Victoria) heat C. Hopner (New South Walm) on points; C. Purdy (New Zealand) l>eat R. Muir (Queensland) on points. Welter-weights.—P. Hansen (New Zealand) Beat E. T. Williams (New South Waleia'l on points; G. Nielson (Queensland) knocked out W. Henderson (Victoria) in the fourth round. Middle-weights.—W. Smith (Queensland) outpointed W. E. Carruthers (Victoria); R. Meale (New Zealand) knocked out J. Brenaan (Now South Wales) in the first round. H«!avry-weights.—M. Killen (Victoria) ! beat W, Pisher (Tasmania), the towel i beinir thrown in at the emi of the second j pound; J. Brancourt (New South Wales] | outpointed G. Muller (Queensland). ; L. McDonald was too strong for Thomp- ' son. Ha used both hands with great effect. •! Thompson was sent to the boards on many ! occasions, but showed wonderful pluck, and was worm'ly cheered. C. Purdy boxed cleanly and had no difficulty in outpointing the lesa experienced Muir. F, Hansen and Williams provided the best bout of ths session. There was little between them, and they were warmly applauded. R. Meale knocked out Brennan with an uppercut to the point. Brancourt and Muller provided an amusing bout. The former was too tall for his opponent, who had to be content with body blows. Three of the four N»w Zealanders competing at the Australasian Amateur Boxing Championships belong to Auckland. Of these, R. Meale (middle-weight), and C. Purdy (feather-weight), represented ! the Dominion last year and each won right ! through the tournament. On that occasion i Purdv was in the bantam class, and had i previously annexed the Auckland and I Dominion championships. This year Purdy I hara boxed in the feather-weight division, j and he and M««Je, before leaving for j Hobart. along with F. Hansen (welterwiiiaht) won the Provincial North Island and Dominion championships. L. McDonald I (liprht-weight) hails from Dunedin and is quite a beginner at boxing. This season he has won the Otago, South Island, and New Zealand championships. - I ==
