PERMITS TO TRAVEL.
ABOLITION OF THE SYSTEM. IDENTIFICATION PAPERS. PASSPORTS STILL NECESSARY. Instructions have been received by the Auckland passport office regarding the relocation of the regulations relating to tho issue of permits to leave New Zealand. As permits were previously necessary only for entry into Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Rarotonga, and Canada, the revocation of the regulations has only a (limited effect and does not touch the passport system, which remains in force. . The issue of a permit involved a police report on each applicant, whereas the issue of a passport does not. The new instructions provide that in lieu of permits for entry into the Pacific Islands mentioned, a certificate of identification shall be issued, while to leave New Zealand for Canada a passport will be necessary, instead of the former permit. Applications for letters of identification to travel to the islands must be made on the form of declaration for a passport, instead of on that for a permit. Persons leaving Now Zealand for Great Britain and other countries will still be reciuired to take out a pasgport as formerly. The new regulations further provide that persons travelling on British passports may have entry into any part of the British Empire, unless the" documents are otherwise endorsed, without the hitherto necessarv endorsement of the local passport officer. Travellers who were born in countries other than New Zealand, will be required to enter on their declaration forms, the date of their arrival in tfyo Dominion, the port of arrival, and the name of the vessel by which the applicant arrived. Passport* will be validated for the countries desired by applicants provided they state clearly in the declaration full particulars of their proposed route of travel. The only country to which New Zealanders may travel with perfect freedom from Govurnment permission, is Australia. Regulations in this instance have been dispensed with for some time, no documents of any kind being necessary for British-born subjects, . j
