ITALIAN EMIGRATION.
ATTEMPT TO USE LEAGUE. AN AUSTRALIAN PROTEST. A. and N.Z. GENEVA, Sept. 20. The attempt to promote the extensive emigration of Russian refugees to the Dominions, which Sir Mark Sheldon defeated, was unexpectedly followed by a similar attempt on behalf of Italians, in tho Finance Committee when a vote aggregating £300,000 a year was under consideration for the International Labour Bureau. M. Albert Thomas (Franco), the director, disclosed the existence of an emigration section, whereupon the representative of the Italian Government appealed for co-operation in emigrating and settling Ital : ans overseas. N Sir Joseph Cook entered a protest. Speaking guardedly with duo, respect to Italian susceptibilities, he pointed out that while Australia had vast areas unsettled, only a small percentage was available for immediate settlement. More British immigrants were available than Australia was able to absorb for some years. He.counselled non-interference on the part of the League. M. Thomas explained that the emigration section proposed to co-operate only.
