MILFORD COTTAGE BURNED
FEARS FOR OWNER'S SAFETY. HOME DESTROYED IN ABSENCE. The destruction by fire of a two-roomed cottage in Pearce Road, Milford, on Saturday evening occasioned much anxiety among residenta in the neighbourhod regarding the safety of the owner and occupier, Mr. A. J. Hall. It was feared that he had been caught in the burning building, and it was not until some time after his home had been reduced to a heap of glowing ashes that it was learned he had been visiting friends. The fire was discovered about half-past eight o'clock. Two neighbours, who had seen Mr. Hall at the cottage earlier in the evening, hurried to the scene, and broke open the door. The interior was already in flames, and they were unable to enter. As there are no fire-fighting pliances at Takapuna, nothing could be done to check the fire, and within an hour the cottage had been completely consumed. It, is believed the outbreak originated in the ignition of some papers by a hot gridiron, which ' had been used for cooking. The building was insured -with the Royal Insurance Company for £190. There was an insurance on the furniture and effects of £40.
